"Lets Talk About Cats" at Dubway

One of our favorite podcasts, Let’s Talk About Cats, recently stopped into the studio to record an interview with engineer Violette Furton. Mary Phillips, the host of Let’s Talk About Cats (alongside producer Lizzie Jacobs), sat down with guitarist Steve Selvidge of The Hold Steady for one of the podcast’s trademark freewheeling conversations about feline companions. Violette Furton tracked the episode on the main floor of our facilities, in one of our pairs of linkable sound and control rooms.

Interviews on this show may start out as being all about cats, but inevitably swerve into related (and less related) territory. Let’s Talk About Cats episodes invariably include a lot about the interviewees that you just can’t get on a non-cat show – The A.V. Club featured a recent episode in their weekly best-of podcasts round up, claiming that Mary’s talent with guests has them, “revealing facets of themselves that would not surface in traditional formats”.

Brenock O’Connor, in an updated look from the furs of his Thrones wardrobe.

Actor Brenock O’Connor (Game of Thrones) visited us just before the holidays to record some ADR for the upcoming Alex Rider series Stormbreaker, set for release in 2020. The recording was directed remotely in collaboration with SNK Studios in London, with Brenock in our booth tracking to picture in the traditional set up. Dubway’s Pascal McGilvray-Guard engineered the recording on the local side, with mixer Ben Darier engineering in London.

O’Connor rose to prominence playing character in HBO’s overwhelmingly successful Game of Thrones series and became surprisingly important in the later seasons, as well as acting in Dickensian and other projects. The Alex Rider series is a young-adult series of spy novels that have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and revolve around the adventures of the titular character.

You can take a look at the trailer for the series below, and follow along with production progress at the IMDB page.

Alastair Macaulay conducts interviews for Voices Of The British Ballet

Notable dance critic Alastair Macaulay (The New York Times) has hosted a series of engrossing interviews with luminaries of the dance and ballet worlds for an upcoming project, Voices Of The British Ballet. Macaulay was the Times’ chief dance critic for eleven years, and just recently retired – although he’s clearly not finished with dance!

You’ll have to stay posted on this one as details about it are scarce, but if you’re a ballet fan, this is something you won’t want to miss. Sessions have been engineered by Violette Furton and Keenan DuBois, who can each attest to the always-interesting (and sometimes-scandalous) stories that Macaulay’s guests have to tell about the various dancers and companies that made waves in the recent history of British dance. Stay tuned!

Crossover Media produces interview with composer Derek Bermel

Noted composer Derek Bermel sat down in our studios last week for a day full of interviews with classical radio stations across the country, produced and organized by Crossover Media. Dubway’s Violette Furton engineered the interviews – no easy feat, as the day consists of back-to-back-to-back remote recordings with radio hosts, over different connections, generally with very tight timing windows.

derek bermel.jpg

Among a long list of accomplishments as a composer and noted ability as a clarinetist, Bermel is the Artistic Director of the American Composers Orchestra, curator of the Gamper Festival at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, Director of Copland House's emerging composers institute Cultivate, and was recently artist-in-residence at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton.

We are always excited to host Crossover Media and the talented artists they bring into our studio. We’ll look forward to the next one! In the meantime, you can listen to Bermel’s recent album Migrations, which was recently nominated for a Grammy Award in the Classical Composition category and was largely the subject of the interviews. Order a copy here or with your preferred classical distribution company!

TransitCenter and Transportation For America record interview

We had the opportunity to sit down and get into the weeds with two figures from major public transportation foundations – Beth Osborne, the director of Transportation For America, and Kapish Singla, of TransitCenter. Both of these organizations do the important work of studying and implementing public transit solutions for urban and suburban cities and developments. They joined us at our Manhattan studios for an interview discussion, lead by Kapish and engineered by Dubway’s Violette Furton, on the future of mass transit and how transit solutions can make our cities more just and sustainable.

Keep an eye on TransitCenter’s media page if you’d like to hear the interview!

"Sound of Philadelphia" nears completion, records ADR at Dubway

sound+of+philly.jpg

SLM Media’s feature film The Sound of Philadelphia recently stopped by our studios to record ADR, as the project moves into its final push. Actor Antoni Corone recorded lines with Dubway’s Pascal McGilveray-Guard, with producer Nicolas Basetto directing the record. Lines were tracked in the classic ADR setup: synchronized with picture, capturing sound to match production audio recorded on set – but with higher fidelity, and a quiet studio noise floor.

You can find out more about this upcoming release, or follow its progress, at the IMDB page for production. We’re excited to see it in its finished form next year!

Dubway-produced Jono Freedrix piece "Nailbiter" selected by Film Shortage

Still from Sucklepump, another of Freedrix’s recent comedic works.

Frequent Dubway collaborator Jono Freedrix has just had a recent comedy short, Nailbiter, selected for a daily pick over at Film Shortage. We were heavily involved in this hilarious and grotesque project as the production (Burgess Carleton) and post-production (Andrew Holzberger, Louis Fisher, and Al Houghton) sound team, and couldn’t be happier to see it getting some shine.

Check out Jono’s “beautifully nasty” film (his words, not ours!) at this link.

Friends of the Highline produces, records at Dubway

We’ve had the pleasure of recording with public arts institution Friends of the High Line over the past few weeks, collaborating with two artists on recorded audio materials to enhance their works. For those out of town, Friends of the High Line manages The High Line, an old elevated subway line on the west side of Manhattan that’s found a second life as a public park, walkway, and arts space.

Both artists we recorded – Shannon Finnegan and Tania Ketenjian – have works currently produced or in production through Friends of the High Line. The artists sat in individual sessions with Dubway engineers Keenan DuBois and Pascal McGilveray-Guard, respectively, to record and produce their audio materials.

You can find each artist’s work and statements at their websites, linked above, and you can find more about the High Line at the link – including where and when to see these works in situ!

Diabolical Season 3 shoots with Dubway, Lion TV

Investigation Discovery’s show Diabolical began shooting for its third season this past month, with Dubway’s Zac Suskevich on set as the production audio / location mix engineer. Suskevich is one of our most experienced location sound mixers and has worked on previous seasons of the show.

Diabolical is produced by London, Glasgow, and New York based production house Lion TV, one of our long-term partners. Dubway (and Suskevich) have contributed to many episodes of Lion’s productions, across a variety of shows, including many for Investigation Discovery. We’re excited to see this partnership continue!

Stay tuned to the upcoming season, or the network’s many other great offerings, on Investigation Discovery’s website.

Brian Cox records for Virgin Radio

We had the pleasure of recording actor Brian Cox (Super Troopers, Bourne Identity, the Royal Shakespeare Company) last week. Cox is working with Virgin Media for a radio project (via Virgin Radio) that’s still a bit quiet, but is sure to become public soon.

Dubway’s Pascal McGilveray-Guard engineered the voice-over recording, in partnership with Irish media production house Mutiny Group, a company we always enjoy working with.

McMeel Publishing records a new comedy book by Sarah Cooper

Sarah Cooper

Sarah Cooper

Author and comic Sarah Cooper has recorded the audiobook of her most recent release, last years’ How To Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings, with us at Dubway! It’s been a pleasure working with her and her team, including her publisher Andrews McMeel Universal and producer Charlie Upchurch.

Sessions were engineered by Dubway’s Louis Fisher and Zac Suskevich in our Main Floor studios. Cooper’s book wasn’t the first audiobook this same team has worked together on, however. Fisher, Suskevich, and Upchurch all contributed to recording and publishing the audiobook for Emmy Marucci’s Tell Me The Story Of You And Me, a book of poetry also published with Andrews McMeel Universal.

McKinsey records company materials in our NYC studios

mckinsey.png

Global consultancy group McKinsey recorded a series of internal audio-based products in our New York studios last month. Dubway engineer Zach Grappone handled the recording, data cleanup, and secure file transfers for the client.

As with all our projects, we are sure to use extremely secure systems when moving/storing client data, whether that’s to keep your unreleased music off of social media or to keep your internal business documents from leaking to the press or public.

There’s not much we can publicly say about this session, other than to congratulate all involved on a great recording!

Hear To Slay brings in guest Cristela Alonzo for new episode

McGilvray-Guard and Alonzo at the studio.

One of our very favorite podcasts to work with, Hear To Slay, recently brought in the great and very funny Cristela Alonzo (Cristela) for a new episode. Hear To Slay is the brainchild of Roxane Gay and Tressie McMillan Cottom, and features interviews with some pretty talented and amazing women, alongside cultural commentary, contemporary intersectional feminist viewpoints, and discussion of current events.

This session was engineered by our own Pascal McGilvray-Guard, who has taken the lead on engineering the majority of Gay and McMillan Cottom’s shows, alongside Dubway engineers Violette Furton and Rory O’Hara. We were lucky and honored to have Alonzo in studio for this session, but as Pascal will tell you, that’s not always the case. Fortunately, we’re set up for remote session recording as well.

Hear To Slay is available from Luminary – you can pick up the podcast and a Luminary subscription right here. We definitely encourage you to do so!

Otajo Abit works on new film in our New York studios

otoja.jpg

Actor and filmmaker Otoja Abit came through our studio last week to record ADR for his newest short film, A New York Christmas Wedding, scheduled for release in January. The session was tracked to picture in the classic ADR configuration, with engineering by Dubway engineer Sydney Schizzano.

Check out Otoja’s previous project, Jitters, on Amazon Prime Video by clicking here. Best of luck with the final push, Otoja!

Maria Geyman and Liza Roeckl's podcast "Funny Feelings", recorded at Dubway.

We’ve had an amazing time working with local wellness and culture podcast Funny Feelings on their first season! The podcast is hosted by Maria Geyman, a naturopathic doctor, and Liza Roeckle, a healer, and it’s all about wellness – often by way of a great linuep of visiting interviewees and personalities. The guests so far have included Emily Meade (The Deuce, Law & Order: SVU) and Lena Dunham (Girls) and are sure to stay interesting in the coming weeks!

Our sessions for Funny Feelings were engineered by Pascal McGilvray-Guard and Burgess Carleton, with Matthias Roeckl producing for the podcast team. Sessions were recorded in our New York studios and on location with our production rig.

You can find more about the podcast on their website.

"The Better Question" – new podcast recorded at Dubway

better question.jpeg

The Better Question is a new podcast for executives from Nerve LLC’s CEO Chris Meyer. The podcast is recorded at Dubway by our engineer Zach Grappone. During the course of the show, Meyer and his guests – Daryl Brewster (pictured with Chris Meyer, left) and Jan Babiak were the latest – discuss topics facing C-suite executives, with a particular focus on high level decision-making.

The Better Question is informative and interesting for anyone (not just the C-suite!) and is available on all major podcast platforms.

"The Kill Team" records at Dubway

The Kill Team, the newest feature from all-star studio A24 (Moonlight, Lady Bird, The Witch, Spring Breakers), is set to release this week, and we were honored to have been a part of the post-production process! Dubway engineer Pascal McGilvray-Guard recorded ADR at Dubway last year in preparation for festival season screenings – and now a commercial release.

The Kill Team stars Alexander Skarsgård (Big Little Lies) and Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars) and is directed by Dan Krauss. The film is set in Afghanistan in 2009, and tells a ‘docudrama’ style history of the Maywand District murders. Rotten Tomatoes currently has this one at 100% after its TriBeCa Film Festival appearance. It’s definitely not to be missed!

“Gully”, TriBeCa feature, has ADR done at Dubway

gully.jpg

We’re proud to announce that Dubway was involved in the ADR recording process for Gully, a feature by Nabil Elderkin that premiered at TriBeCa Film Festival 2019 and featured performances from Jacob Latimore, Charlie Plummer, and Kelvin Harrison Jr (as well as a cameo by Travis Scott).  Sessions were engineered by Louis Fisher and Nathaniel Reichman in our Main Floor studios in New York. We’ve sat on this news for some time so it’s great to finally be able to share this project, and our part in it, with the world.

Amazing work all around – keep your eyes peeled for a home release!

Linus Ignatius's short film "MASS" screens at NewFest

mass.png

Director, actor, and producer Linus Ignatius’s new short film, MASS, is scheduled to premier at this year’s NewFest! The film is a narrative, semi-autobiographical dark comedy that deals with body dysmorphia and HIV. Post-production sound, including ADR, Foley, ambience, and re-record mixing, was produced and mixed by Dubway’s Keenan DuBois at our Manhattan studios, with Linus in attendance to direct the initial mix.

Tickets for NewFest can be reached at the festival link above; for more of Linus’s work, click here. Congratulations to all involved!

Engineering for the session was lead by Dubway’s Louis Fisher. Find the show on Acorn at the link above!
